SUMMARY

OptiLink was developed through a collaborative product design project focused on ecological design. It tackles plastic waste from the contact lens industry by introducing a modular, lightweight container designed for infinite linking, improved portability, and easier recyclability.

A new vision for contact lens cases

Optilink reinvents traditional contact lens containers with a biodegradable, modular, and stackable design, offering unmatched organization and portability

two distinct designs

Optilink considers two distinct use cases,
a minimal option for daily disposable contact lenses that packages in a singular design, and a long term design for reusable contact lenses with added organization.

link and snap

The modular design allows multiple pairs to connect both horizontally and vertically, enabling users to easily organize and combine them as needed.

key findings

The project stem from the overlooked problem of tons of plastic waste generated through disposable and reusable contact lens cases, and imagines an opportunity for a biodegradable form with added functionalities.

ideation

Guided by the concepts of modularity and connection,I began ideation with rough sketches, exploring how contact lens containers could vertically link much like the LEGO blocks. These early sketches explored hollowed-out extrusions for connection points and a hole in daily cases for clipping them together.

prototyping

The first iterations were 3D Printed directly in PLA and tested for it's strength, connections and portability.

evolution

Building on insights from the initial iterations, I rapidly experimented with new versions before finalizing a simple, effective design. These iterations trace our journey from the first concept to the final solution.

Coherent design

I help create a clear and coherent visual identity and designed the pitch deck which seamlessly integrate our renders and product shots, and is applied throughout the product's packaging and design.

ordering & returns

To encourage active participation in recycling, we needed meaningful incentives. I designed a reward system that lets users earn, track, and redeem points, making sustainability more engaging.

Purposeful
packaging

We also designed recycling and return instructions directly within the interior of the packaging, eliminating the needs for extra paper instructions

Final outcomes

The final outcome is lightweight, rigid and robust. Shown here is the daily design which can be clipped directly together.
